Elizabeth grew up in rural Eastern North Carolina where most people farmed for a living. The number one crop was tobacco. She attended Appalachian State University and after graduation, returned home briefly to work as a news reporter at the local country and western radio station, WRNS. Obituaries, bounced checks and lost pets were included in every broadcast. Eventually, she wound up in the graduate writing program at San Francisco State receiving an MA in English and Creative Writing.
